A lot of people hear this during IVF:
“Your embryo looks good.”
And naturally, it sounds reassuring.
Good means high chance.
Good means it should work.
But then sometimes… it still doesn’t.
So what does “good” actually mean here?
In IVF, “good embryo” usually refers to how the embryo looks in the lab.
Things like:
- shape
- number of cells
- how it develops over days
These are all visual markers.
But appearance is only part of the story.
An embryo can look “perfect”
and still not develop the way we expect after transfer.
Then what is missing?
There are things we can see,
and things we can’t fully measure.
Even with advanced tools,
not everything about an embryo’s potential is visible.
What about genetic testing?
Doesn’t that confirm if it’s truly good?
Testing can check certain things, like chromosome patterns.
That helps reduce some risks.
But again — it’s not the full picture.
So “good embryo” doesn’t mean guaranteed success.
It means:
“This embryo has features we associate with better chances.”
That small difference is where many expectations break.
Because “better chance” still leaves room for uncertainty.
